A NEW rest stop and visitor information display has been opened at Paddys Rest, Eungai Rail.

The display provides motorists with information about destinations, attractions and other tourism experiences, says Oxley MP and Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner.

"Driver fatigue is a significant cause of death and serious injury on NSW roads and rest stops with more interactive features like at Paddys Rest Area help tackle driver fatigue by encouraging more people to stop, revive, survive," he said.

"With information to read and visitor attractions to learn about, the displays provide a good opportunity for motorists to stop and take a break.

"The key message to motorists in the lead up to the busy Christmas break is to plan ahead, allow plenty of time to arrive without speeding and don't push on when fatigued."

Mr Stoner said Roads and Maritime Services planed to install more than 20 of the visitor information displays along the Pacific Highway to provide advice to motorists about the area through which they are travelling.

"The innovative and eye-catching structure at Eungai Rail contains information about the North Coast area, local Aboriginal heritage and driver fatigue.

"Road users don't often get the opportunity to learn about the local Aboriginal culture and heritage near where they are travelling and this project is a great initiative to help Aboriginal heritage education.

"The plan is to have each of the seven Aboriginal nations between the Hawkesbury River and the Queensland border on the Pacific Highway featured on a number of displays at rest areas along the coast.

"To complement this information, RMS plans to install new road signs to show road users they are travelling through these nations and will direct them to the next rest area where they can learn about the nation's history, dreaming, language, bush tucker and opportunities to visit Aboriginal attractions or experiences."
